Chinese Taipei,

Chinese Taipei - TPE

Population: 22,603,001
Capital: Taipei
Language(s): Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese, Hakka dialects

Chinese Taipei's official name is "Republic of China," which consists of Taiwan, two small offshore islands and several nearby islets. Commonly referred to as Taiwan, the Republic of China is located about 100 miles off the southeast coast of the People's Republic of China.

OLYMPIC TRADITION
In 1956, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) accepted a Taiwanese team, called the Republic of China, for the Melbourne Games, and the People's Republic dropped out when a nationalist Chinese banner was raised in the Olympic Village. The Republic of China withdrew from the 1976 Games in Montreal, protesting the agreement between the IOC and the Canadian government that it must compete under the name Taiwan. It boycotted the 1980 Games. In 1981, the nation agreed to an IOC proposal that it compete under a new name, flag and national anthem. Five of Chinese Taipei's 10 Olympic medals came in 2000; it has never won a gold. Its baseball team finished second to Cuba at the 1992 Games with 11 players from its Little League World Series championship teams.

OLYMPIC LEGENDS
In 1960, Taiwan's C.K. Yang finished second to UCLA teammate Rafer Johnson of the United States in a memorable decathlon duel. Eight years later, Chi Cheng became the first Asian woman to win an Olympic track and field medal when she finished third in the high hurdles. Table tennis player Chen Jing won the women's singles title for China in 1988, then returned eight years later for Taiwan and took silver.

ATHENS OUTLOOK
Chinese Taipei's best chances for medals in Athens are in taekwondo. Chen Shih Hsin and Ni Wu Yen won World Cup titles in 2002, and Chen Yang Wen was third. Chinese Taipei's softball team placed third at the 2002 World Championships and figures to contend for a medal, as does its baseball team, which finished second (behind Japan) at the 2003 Asian Championships.
